What is a CDR Report?

A Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) is a technical document that students submit to Engineers Australia (EA) for assessment and verification. Engineers intending to migrate to Australia for educational or professional opportunities must prepare and submit a CDR to Engineers Australia to have their skills and qualifications evaluated.

Engineers Australia is the professional body for engineers in Australia. They will only approve CDR reports that adhere to the guidelines outlined in the MSA Booklet. Additionally, the reports must be grammatically accurate and free of plagiarism in order to meet the necessary criteria for approval.

The CDR assessment focuses primarily on the applicant’s undergraduate education and their professional abilities. For the purpose of Australian immigration, Engineers Australia recognizes four categories, each with its own set of required competencies:

Professional Engineers: Professional Engineers are responsible for managing engineering projects and programs that support societal, business, and governmental needs. They must have the ability to understand the costs, risks, and limitations of projects, work with various stakeholders, ensure the reliable functioning of materials and technologies, and contribute to the overall success of the project. Professional Engineers are seen as innovators and leaders of change, often conducting research to advance science and technology. Those who have completed a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering are eligible to apply in this category.

Engineering Technologists: Engineering Technologists are experts in specific engineering technologies or related fields. They are expected to stay current with emerging technologies in their field and their practical applications. While they may not have the broad vision of Professional Engineers, they excel at applying specialized knowledge in their area of expertise. Applicants with a three-year Bachelor’s degree or diploma in an Engineering Technology discipline are eligible to apply in this category.

Engineering Associates: Engineering Associates are often referred to as paraprofessionals in Australia. They are well-versed in standards, codes of practice, and the operational aspects of plants and equipment. Their roles can include feasibility studies, design and development, material sourcing, procurement, and operations management. With a solid foundation in engineering principles, Engineering Associates may either start their own businesses or move into senior management roles where they oversee Professional Engineers and other specialists. Applicants with a two-year diploma or degree in any engineering field can apply under this category.

Engineering Managers: Engineering Managers are responsible for setting engineering goals, policies, and plans, as well as supervising engineering activities within an organization. This is a senior leadership role, and only candidates with seven years of experience as a Professional Engineer, including at least three years in a managerial position, are eligible. Additionally, those under their management must be at the Professional Engineer level.
